Your argument seems a bit ‘reductio ad absurdum’ here. Just because we can’t draw a bright line between what is middle class vs poor doesn’t mean we can’t characterize needs beyond the assertion that they are all social. The obvious contenders for non-social needs are the basic physical needs. Perhaps a reasonable working definition for a kind of ‘true needs’ would be those that are universal. The need to communicate with others is universal, the need for an iPhone is not. So this might give us some guidance as to which needs we should be concerned with for social policy.
