For those of us who lived and worked under "self-managed socialism", it seems amazing from today's perspective that the system functioned, in some periods pretty well, for decades. One factor of its success that is rarely discussed is the amount of foreign aid Yugoslavia has received from the West after the breakup with Moscow. I made a humble contribution to that issue: "The Changing Role of the U.S.A in Financing Yugoslav Economic Development Since 1945", Economic and Strategic Issues in U.S. Foreign Policy, deGruyter, Berlin, 1989.

I am sure I am missing the finer points, but what's the difference between labour income and profit if the enterprise belongs to the wokers soviet anyway? Won't the profits, i.e. net profits after payment of "rent", which probably includes depreciation, be distributed among workers anyway? That's no different from your usual production cooperative, i.e. артель, btw.
