I read Yuen yuen ang's book 'how China escaped poverty trap?' . One thing i found impressive was the point about nature of corruption. The petty corruption started to disappear in China and paved way for sophisticated rentier corruption of organized economy. It's said that US & UK etc are countries without corruption - a gross misconception. The nature of corruption has changed.

There is little amount of petty corruption in US but organized corruption is entrenched and institutionalized. Example is revolving doors, quid pro quo policy favors, backroom deals, dark money in SuperPACs, campaign financing etc. And now with arrival of Trump, America is becoming as corrupt as 3rd world nation.

Branko, remember how we all welcome Bhagwati's (and some others) writings on DUPs, rent-seeking, and possible gains from DUPs arising as a corrective of the disastrous policymaking of bureaucrats (party?). I think it is difficult to see how "rent-seeking" activity - even if done on behalf of a self-managed enterprise to correct for a wrong policy- could be beneficial in a long run? Shouldn't one fix a distortion that invites rent-seeking behavior?
